- I try to encourage people to think of "multimedia" as a scale more than a
- singular definition. The word itself just means "multiple media". Well,
- in the literal sense there are several examples of (serial) multimedia
- machines (e.g. a television set, a movie projector with sound, a video
- tape player, a laser disc player, etc.).
-
- There are also interactive multimedia machines which narrow the
- definition (e.g. an arcade game, an information kiosk, or a computer
- capable of running a game or a dynamic graphics simulation program).
-
- Then there's the issue of content development. Are users merely
- interested in playback or do they want to be able to develop their own
- multimedia presentations? This is where capability and performance
- become most important.
-
- The Amiga once had a clear advantage in this area because it, almost
- exclusively, had all of the basic tools for multimedia development "out
- of the box." Now, consumers don't distinguish between peripherals and
- standard features anymore because they just see add-ons as optional
- equipment (like a sunroof for your car).
-
- I propose that so-called "multimedia machines" be ranked according to
- three scales:
-
- a. How many different types of media they are able to present (and the
- relative costs associated with doing so);
-
- b. How well they support interactivity with the media that they are
- capable of presenting (and the associated costs); and,
-
- c. What it takes to develop multimedia content and how many different
- types of media are supported (and the associated costs).
